A first MIS should answer five questions and nothing else: How much revenue closed? What's the gross margin? What's the cash runway? Which cohort/product/geography is drifting? Which line item deserves surgical attention this month?
Structure the page in a Z-pattern: top-left revenue (with prior-month and PY comparison), top-right margin bridge, mid-band cash & receivables, bottom-left the drift chart, bottom-right the CFO's note (max 150 words).
Make comparability sacred. Same definitions, same cut-off, same currency. The moment a metric definition changes mid-year, your MIS becomes a debate instead of a decision.
Distribute by the 7th of every month. If the numbers aren't ready by the 7th, the process is broken — not the team. Fix the close, not the dashboard.
